Phone scam uses officer, federal agent and hydro company impersonation: police

Police are warning the public about a scam where callers impersonate officers, border guards and federal officials threatening arrest if money isn't sent.

Toronto police say phone calls appear to come from official numbers related to police officers, the Canada Revenue Agency, the Canada Border Services Agency, Immigration Canada and Hydro One.

They say the callers demand payment on overdue bills, fines or taxes.

Police say they demand payment by wire transfer or the purchase of pre-paid credit cards.

This is just the latest scam police are warning the public about, and officers say hang up and call the appropriate agency to verify claims and never give money to a stranger.
